Kanaka Durga Temple, Vijayawada

The Durga temple on Indrakeeladri hill, overlooking the Krishna at Vijayawada.

Significance

The temple occupies Indrakeeladri, a rocky hill rising directly above the Krishna river in the middle of Vijayawada. The goddess is worshipped here as Kanaka Durga, and the site is among the most important Devi shrines in Andhra Pradesh. Its position in a large city, immediately above a major river crossing, makes it unusually accessible for a hill shrine and accounts for the very heavy footfall during Navaratri, when the goddess is presented in a different alankaram on each day of the festival.

Navaratri here is on a different scale from an ordinary day, with queue routes, traffic arrangements and river-bathing ghats all managed specially for the festival. Outside that period the climb is straightforward and the hill gives a wide view over the Krishna.
